WIN Semiconductors reported a soft December quarter (Q4), reflecting the seasonality of the mobile phone market. However, revenue for the full year grew 13 percent. Q4 margins declined from a drop in capacity utilization and a decline in the value of gold inventory, reflecting the drop in gold prices.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) concluded that the proposed acquisition of Wolfspeed by Infineon "poses a risk to the national security of the United States." Infineon stated in a press release "that there is a considerable risk that the transaction, as agreed, is not going to close."

IBM and Ericsson announced what they claim is the world's first reported Si millimeter wave phased array antenna module operating at 28 GHz. The module consists of four MMICs and 64 dual-polarized antennas and measures approximately 2.8" x 2.8" — about half the size of a typical smartphone.

CEL introduced low cost pHEMTs for Ku- and Ka-Band satellite receivers. These CEL pHEMTs are drop-in replacements to the Renesas pHEMTs, also offered by CEL.

LeddarTech Inc. and Integrated Device Technology, Inc. will jointly develop and supply LIDAR ICs, a key sensor for self-driving vehicles. The LCA2 IC is a receiver that will enable high performance and low cost LIDARs, supporting the sub-$100 target for 2D and 3D flash LIDARs.

Skyworks Solutions Inc. announced that Steven C. Machuga has been promoted to vice president of worldwide operations. Machuga has been with Skyworks since 1999 and most recently served as vice president of external manufacturing and operations engineering.

Peregrine Semiconductor announces the UltraCMOS® 12 technology platform. Now in production, this next-generation RF SOI platform boasts the industry’s lowest RONCOFF performance level of 80 fs—a 25-percent improvement over the last generation, and was developed in collaboration with GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

Qorvo® has joined the China Mobile 5G Innovation Center, an alliance created to develop 5G solutions for China, the world’s largest wireless communications market. The innovation center is promoting industry collaboration on 5G development and the migration from 4G, including use cases such as self-driving cars, the IoT and VR/AR.

MACOM completed its acquisition of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation on January 26, 2017. The deal strengthens MACOM’s portfolio for the data center market, adding OTN framers, MACsec Ethernet networking components and a single-lambda PAM4 platform.
