Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) announced the industry’s first demonstrations of the new ZigBee® Light Link standard on the CC2530 ZigBee system-on-chip (SoC). Developed by leading lighting and technology companies within the ZigBee Alliance, ZigBee Light Link standardizes wireless networked LED lighting systems making them easier to install, manage and operate than previous closed proprietary systems.

Analog Devices, Inc. introduced the ADuCM360, a fully integrated, 4-kSPS, 24-bit data acquisition system-on-a-chip incorporating dual, high-performance, multi-channel sigma-delta A/D converters, a 32-bit ARM CortexTMM3MCU, and flash/EE memory.

Tower mounted amplifiers have now become a common addition to most macro base station systems. They increase overall system performance and are now easily mounted and monitored. Tower mounted amplifiers can provide significant BTS performance improvement for a moderate investment. Lance Wilson, research director, mobile networks, notes, “The use of tower mounted amplifiers in wireless infrastructure base station systems represents one of the most cost effective ways of improving overall system performance.”

DragonWave Inc. announced the closing of the acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks’ microwave transport business including its associated operational support system (OSS) and related support functions. The acquisition was effected pursuant to the Amended and Restated Master Acquisition Agreement between DragonWave Inc., its wholly-owned subsidiary DragonWave S.à r.l. and Nokia Siemens Networks dated May 3, 2012 (the “Master Acquisition Agreement”).

M/A-COM Tech announced a new Transmit/Receive module Driver IC that provides 6-Bit serial/parallel logic control and T/R switch control for multifunction T/R modules. 

Next year, Colombia will be the first country in Latin America to go on the air with a DVB-T2 TV network and the network will use R&S THU9 high-power transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz. Recently introduced on the market, these transmitters help network operators significantly reduce their energy and infrastructure costs.

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that the Smart-RF research project undertaken by a consortium of companies led by Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, achieved a major breakthrough for base station deployment. The group developed the technical foundation for a new reconfigurable radio frequency transmitter capable of supporting different wireless standards within a single radio frequency band.

Cambridge Consultants completed initial trials with Iridium Communications of new key components of the world’s largest push-to-talk (PTT) radio system.
