GLOBALFOUNDRIES announced plans to expand its global manufacturing footprint in response to growing customer demand for its comprehensive and differentiated technology portfolio. The company is investing in its existing leading-edge fabs in the United States and Germany, expanding its footprint in China with a fab in Chengdu, and adding capacity for mainstream technologies in Singapore.

WIN Semiconductors reported a soft December quarter (Q4), reflecting the seasonality of the mobile phone market. However, revenue for the full year grew 13 percent. Q4 margins declined from a drop in capacity utilization and a decline in the value of gold inventory, reflecting the drop in gold prices.

Mobile filter start-up Resonant Inc. announced that one of its customers has shipped more than one million pre-production SAW (surface acoustic wave) duplexers, covering three high volume mobile bands, to four handset manufacturers. These are Resonant’s first pre-production shipments.

Keysight Technologies Inc. announced that it will showcase its latest software-centric design and test solutions for LTE-A, 5G, IoT and Connected Car technologies at Mobile World Congress 2017, Hall 6, Stand 6G10, Barcelona, Feb. 27 – March 2. Keysight is an active participant in many influential wireless standards bodies and leading 5G global initiatives. Keysight also collaborates with industry-leading companies and academia to enable the next-generation of wireless communications systems.

Mercury Systems Inc. announced it received a $4.1 million follow-on order from a leading defense prime contractor for wideband millimeter wave transceivers for a homeland security high-resolution imaging application. The order was booked in the company's fiscal 2017 third quarter and is expected to be shipped over the next several quarters.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) concluded that the proposed acquisition of Wolfspeed by Infineon "poses a risk to the national security of the United States." Infineon stated in a press release "that there is a considerable risk that the transaction, as agreed, is not going to close."

Integrated Device Technology Inc. (IDT) introduced its next-generation 10 Gbps-class millimeter wave (mmWave) modem for wireless infrastructure carrier deployments in both access and backhaul. The IDT® RWM6050 is the industry's first highly integrated mmWave dual modem (PHY + MAC + ADC/DAC + beamforming) for applications such as fixed wireless broadband access, WTTx (wireless to the edge), small cell backhaul, 5G service and other emerging applications.

AtlanTecRF, a leading global RF and microwave components and equipment manufacturer, announced the appointment of Mike Andrioff as its new North American sales manager. Andrioff will be responsible for expanding AtlanTecRF’s North American business with a specific focus on growing the company’s already successful Satcom RF Testing Equipment sales.

AtlanTecRF launched its LNI series of noise injection loop test translator (LTT) systems for off-satellite loop back testing of the transmit signal.

IBM and Ericsson announced what they claim is the world's first reported Si millimeter wave phased array antenna module operating at 28 GHz. The module consists of four MMICs and 64 dual-polarized antennas and measures approximately 2.8" x 2.8" — about half the size of a typical smartphone.
