Motorola Inc. will help develop and implement KDDI’s LTE network, including RAN/base stations, in Japan, and thus enable KDDI to offer high-speed mobile broadband services, such as video and social networking, to its customers across the country. The two companies have been building networks together in Japan for 20 years, introducing the country’s first CDMA network and many other technical advancements.
KDDI will deploy its LTE network in both 1.5 GHz and 800 MHz bands to maximize the effective use of these frequencies. The company intends to offer commercial LTE services by December 2012 following a series of trials scheduled to begin in mid 2010.
“We are honored to be selected by our long-time customer KDDI to team with them in developing an innovative solution for their networking needs,” said Bruce Brda, Senior Vice President and general manager, Motorola Wireless Networks. “Motorola is committed to bringing LTE to the market and delivering flexible solutions that help customers like KDDI accelerate the delivery of next-generation wireless access services in the most cost-effective manner possible.”
This latest contract is a demonstration of the steady progress Motorola’s Wireless Networks business is making in securing trials and commitments for LTE networks from operators around the world. It follows on from earlier this year when Motorola launched its LTE trial network and testing lab in Swindon, UK.
