EADS Defence & Security (DS) together with its local partner Integrated Energy Systems & Resources Inc. (IESRI), Manila, Philippines, has been awarded a contract to deliver one of the most advanced secondary radar systems for air traffic control purposes to the Philippine Air Transportation Office (ATO). The system, which will be delivered by mid-2008, will be the first building block of a comprehensive modern air traffic control network.

Defence Electronics, an integrated Business Unit of EADS Defence & Security, will establish this first air traffic control system employing the latest Mode-S standard in the region. Mode-S is an enhancement of existing air traffic control procedures in the process of implementation worldwide. IESRI will take over the system responsibility with technical support from EADS Defence & Security.

The surveillance systems, comprising MSSR 2000 I secondary radars, provide an overview of the air situation based on interrogations, that are in part transmitted in coded form, and automatic replies from the aircraft. This supplements the information previously supplied by ATO radars and in this way improves monitoring of air traffic.

Together with air defense and traffic surveillance radars MSSR 2000 I is in service in Germany and numerous other countries and is claimed to be the only civil/military qualified Mode-S enhanced surveillance secondary radar in the world offering military Mode-5 capabilities. This dual use capability offers significant commonality savings.
