Today, Qualcomm Technologies announced a reference design for 5G-based fixed wireless access home gateways, which will enable mobile operators to offer broadband services that compete with cable, fiber to the home and DSL.

Qualcomm’s reference design pairs the Snapdragon™ X55 5G modem-RF system with the Networking Pro 1200 platform for Wi-Fi 6. 5G provides the link from the internet to the premises, with the users connecting to the internet through Wi-Fi 6.

As the Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF system supports multi-gigabit data rates, mobile operators can leverage investments in 5G infrastructure to provide broadband internet access to homes and businesses, creating new revenue streams.

Networking Pro 1200

The Networking Pro 1200 platform is Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ and supports up to 12 spatial streams, with a multi-user scheduling algorithms and advanced implementation of multi-user MIMO and OFDMA across all spatial streams in uplink and downlink. The networking architecture was developed for high-density environments, simultaneously supporting connected devices.

The Networking Pro 1200 platform provides security acceleration for virtual private networks and integrated voice-calling support for hardwired telephone lines, i.e., “plain old telephone service” (POTS), with e-911 emergency call capabilities.

The reference design uses 64-bit quad-core CPUs for the firewall-router-gateway, giving the computing power for dynamic data processing and management.

The Qualcomm Networking Pro 1200 platform is being sampled to equipment manufacturers; production volumes are planned during the first half of 2020.

Qualcomm is demonstrating the home gateway reference design at Broadband World Forum (BBWF), October 15-17.
