On June 12, TMD Technologies Ltd. celebrates its 20th anniversary since founders Peter Butcher and Howard Smith undertook an MBO (Management Buy-out) in 1995 from Thorn EMI Electronics.
Now a substantial hi-tech design and manufacturing SME, with its headquarters in Hayes, West London, TMD has grown to become a world leader in the supply of microwave tubes, high voltage power supplies and transmitters for radar, EW, communications, EMC HIRF testing, and other laboratory applications. This growth has been substantial, with turnover in 2013 more than 200% higher than at the start of the MBO.
Backed by some 70 years of experience – going back to the original formation of EMI Laboratories in the 1940s – TMD has also earned itself an enviable global reputation for specialised microwave product innovation and reliability.
Says Dave Brown, managing director, “20 years is an extremely impressive achievement for an MBO in our technology sector, but this is only the beginning. Our future goal is to be the ‘Preferred Partner’ for innovative and reliable RF and microwave power solutions worldwide, and by 2018 we hope to achieve further growth of more than 60%. The Sharing in Growth programme (below) will be a key element in attaining this”.
Chosen for government funding
Last year, Sharing in Growth, a government regional growth funded initiative, chose TMD as one of forty UK aerospace civil and defence manufacturing suppliers to benefit from £50 M of total funding. The funding releases more than £1 M of top industry consultant-based expertise to TMD to help achieve further enhanced world class business performance standards.
USA is major market
More than 70 percent of TMD’s products are exported – mainly to the USA. Highlighting TMD’s superiority in this important marketing area was the earlier winning of a large order, then valued at £28 M, for microwave power amplifier modules for ground mobile surveillance radar – a key element in the US homeland defence programme.
In 2013, to maintain its growing Stateside market, TMD opened a subsidiary in Baltimore, Maryland - with technical and commercial support for its customers in the USA across the entire range of TMD’s products.
Winner of Queen’s Award
TMD is a twice winner of the Queen’s Award to Industry, and has received a visit from HRH The Duke of York, KG in recognition of the company’s contribution to manufacturing and exports - as part of his ongoing work supporting the successes and achievements of British SMEs.
