I just returned from Mobile World Congress and the hot topics were 5G and IoT which mirrors what we have seen lately on the technology front. There is some controversy in discussing 5G these days as it is not defined yet, but we will cover the developments as the technology works itself out in the industry and standards organizations. IoT topics at MWC ranged from smart cities to the connected homes to vehicle-to-vehicle communications to wearable devices and were demonstrated in many of the booths at the exhibition.
Our March Test and Measurement issue’s cover story is about platforms that drive innovation in RF/microwave system design to enable the development of next generation systems like 5G communications. Dr. James Truchard, CEO of National Instruments, discusses how these platforms are doing this with real examples of 5G technologies being developed in much less time than using traditional prototyping systems. Mario Narduzzi, Software and Modular Solutions Marketing Manager at Keysight Technologies, discusses a similar topic of how flexible modular test systems reduce time to market also giving an example of PA development cycle using a standard reference solution of hardware and software.
We also have our March Cable and Connector supplement featuring an interesting look at leaky wave antenna technology as CST and Gore provide an overview of the technology and some examples of products. This annual supplement is used throughout the year as a reference piece at many shows.
April brings our flagship IMS issue distributed in the delegate bags and in our booth for a significant boost in visibility. The cover feature chronicles the rise of Motorola in the Phoenix area as IMS takes place there this year. It covers the history, culture and successful spinoffs that helped shape the high tech industry in the area. It is a very interesting story written by a Motorola/Freescale insider, Leonard Pelletier (aka RF Leonard). The issue will cover the conferences, exhibition and will be packed with technical features about many new developments in the industry.
This year May becomes our Amplifier and Oscillator issue. We have some interesting oscillator articles including a cover story about the latest developments in VCO technology and the key parameters in VCO selection written by Dr. Khanna of NI Components (formerly Phase Matrix). Moving the IMS issue to April has also enabled us to schedule a new May supplement on Aerospace and Defense technology. Technical Editor Gary Lerude will contribute the cover feature about new updates this year to the ITAR regulations and discuss what impact it might have on manufacturers.
It is going to be a busy spring. We hope to see everyone at EDI CON China in April and IMS in May!
