SOURCES
Clock Synthesizer IC
The model FS6017 clock synthesizer IC features five independent phase-locked loops (PLL) programmed to handle the specific clock frequency requirements of the target application. The IC provides synchronized frequencies derived from a single, common reference yielding more predictable EMI characteristics than independent oscillator devices. Clock outputs also can be tristated to facilitate on-board testing. The unit is available in a 16-pin 0.150" SOIC package. Price: $2.95 (10,000).

PCS Frequency Synthesizer
The model STC 2101 frequency synthesizer operates in the 1.6 to 2.1 GHz frequency range on overlapping 200 MHz segments and is targeted for PCS applications. The operating frequency is set manually by on-board switches in 50 kHz steps. Two reference options are available, including standard internal with +/-2 ppm or external. Output power is +10 dBm nominal and phase noise is –105 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset.

Crystal Oscillators
The 275 series oven-controlled, SC-cut crystal oscillators comply with global positioning systems (GPS) frequency control requirements where temperature stabilities of less than 5 ppb total deviation from 0° to +75°C are required. Standard features include a phase noise of less than –160 dBc/Hz at 1000 Hz and greater offsets, and aging of no more than 50 ppb per year. Price: less than $170 (500).

SAW Oscillators
The models HO4001 and HO4001P 1 GHz, voltage-controlled tunable surface acoustic wave (SAW) oscillators phase lock in a PLL circuit. The model HO4001 features a standard DIP package and the model HO4001P features a surface-mount package. The oscillators offer SAW stability, a tuning range of ~700 ppm and an output power of +10 dBm (typ). Phase noise at 10 kHz offset is typically –130 dBc/Hz, power supply is +5 V/50 mA and operating temperature range is –20° to +70°C. Price: $125 each (100).

Miniature Surface-mount VCOs
The models PV-1550 and PV-1651 miniature surface-mount VCOs designed for use in satellite mobile receiver applications feature a 3 V supply voltage and low current consumption of 15 mA. The units are based on a miniature package dimension of 0.500" x 0.500" x 0.205". The model PV-1550 covers a frequency range from 1500 to 1600 MHz with a tuning voltage of 0 to 3 V. The model PV-1651 operates over the 1600 to 1700 MHz frequency range with a tuning voltage of 0 to 3 V and a phase noise of –90 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset.

YIG-based Synthesizers
The MTS-1500 series permanent magnet yttrium iron garnet (YIG)-based synthesizers are designed for use in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint applications. The 4 to 50 GHz frequency range provides the ability to move from frequency shift-keying (FSK) to QPSK and up to QAM modulation techniques utilizing a single high quality source for most radio needs. The synthesizers feature low noise and broad bandwidth, and are in full compliance with ETSI 300019 environmental standards from –30°C to +70°C.
