The 2012 International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology (ICMMT2012) and 2012 Microwave Wireless Industry Exhibition in China (MWIE2012) was held in Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center on May 5-8. The conference kicked off Sunday with 3 keynote speakers: Prof. Thomas Brazil, University College Dublin discussed “Time‐Domain Techniques in High Frequency Nonlinear Simulation,” Prof. Raj Mittra, Pennsylvania State University discussed “A Critical Look at Transformation Optics Approach to Designing Cloaks, Superlenses and Directive Antennas for Microwaves and Millimeter Waves using Metamaterials,” and Prof. Roberto Sorrentino, Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Perugia, Italy discussed “Recent advances in compact and reconfigurable waveguide filters.”
The event is sponsored by the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE) and supported by the Microwave Society of the CIE which is the equivalent in the US of the IEEE and MTT-S. Several universities are involved with the HIT Shenzhen Graduate School, South China University of Technology and Kingradio Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. being supporters locally. The conference is heavily attended by students and future engineers so a great learning experience for the delegates.
There were about 60 exhibiting companies and universities. Many universities and Chinese Institutes exhibited along with many microwave companies such as Agilent, R&S, AWR, CST, Ansys, Chinese Electronics Technology Group Corp. #41 (CETC #41 – Test & Meas), CETC #55 (Components), WIN Semi, Maury Microwave, EMSS/FEKO, Isola, IW, Mitron (major Chinese Distributor) and others. Microwave Journal China was displaying the newest issue, May/June. Many of the local Chinese companies are now looking to expand their presence outside the country although many are still at full capacity due to internal needs.
One gem we visited with was a web site called rfeda.cn which is a microwave portal community. This web site was created by Zhang Liang about 6 years ago and now has more than 10,000 members. It has various forums and discussions related to EDA topics and software packages. There are about 200 discussion monitors overseeing the site. He has done a great job developing a well known web site on his own time.
The MWIE is held with the National Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave in China (Microwave Annual Conference of China) every odd year and with International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology every even year. International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology is organized by Microwave Society of Chinese Institute of Electronics and is the largest conference in microwave and millimeter wave field in China according to the organizers. It will be held in Nanjing next year.
