Chinese users welcomed a long-awaited tie-up between Apple and China Mobile, the world's biggest wireless operator, but analysts warned Monday that the deal's impact depends on the quality of the carrier's 4G network.

For the second calendar quarter in a row, smartphone shipments represented more than half (52%) of the world’s mobile phone shipments.  Led by electronics manufacturer Samsung, an estimated 408 million handsets and 214 million smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2013, according to market intelligence firm ABI Research.

An estimated 405 million handsets, including 197 million smartphones, were shipped in the first quarter of 2013, according to market intelligence firm ABI Research. Worldwide handset shipments decreased 1.9 percent YoY to 387.3 million units in Q3 2012, according to new data from market intelligence firm ABI Research. Worldwide smartphone shipments increased 32.8 percent  YoY to 155.5 million over the same period. Samsung retained the lead position in both handset and smartphone shipments. Underscoring its accomplishment, Samsung shipped more than double the smartphones of second place Apple.

ABI Research has determined that the cellular handset market shipped 353.5 million handsets in Q1 2012 which represents a -3.8% YoY and -16.5% sequential drop in shipments. The smartphone market delivered 142 million shipments in Q1 for a 38% YoY gain and a -8.1% sequential decline. Apple’s 35.1 million shipments were supported by APAC while Samsung’s 83.4 million displaced Nokia from the top position that it has held for over a decade.
