iRobot Corp., a leader in delivering robotic technology-based solutions, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its Defense and Security business to Arlington Capital Partners for up to $45 million in total consideration, including a contingent payment based on achieving certain milestones. 

In a report from ABI Research, smart watches will drive the most interest for wearables integration into the smart home even though fitness trackers were approximately two-thirds of all wearable device shipments in 2014. Recent announcements of Android Wear from Google and Apple Watch are driving integration efforts from various smart home platform vendors such as iControl, Alarm.com and Samsung’s SmartThings.

Freescale Semiconductor is driving next-generation, multi-gigabit broadband access toward mainstream adoption with the industry’s first 10 Gbps Internet plus 10 Gbps Wi-Fi enabled home gateway solution. Freescale developed its new QorIQ LS1043A residential gateway in collaboration with Quantenna Communications. Coupled with open, Linux-based security, video streaming and networking applications, the platform enables dramatic boosts in bandwidth, throughput and quality of service.

Intel Corp. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Lantiq, a leading supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The transaction is expected to close in approximately 90 days. Deal terms were not disclosed.

The smart home appliance market, defined by products with built-in connectivity, will witness substantial growth over the next five years, reaching nearly $25 billion by 2018. Currently limited to the top-end luxury models, wireless connectivity will slowly permeate to lower tier brands and models.

Skyworks Solutions Inc., an innovator of high performance analog semiconductors enabling a broad range of end markets, announced that it is partnering with Wistron NeWeb Corp., a leading ODM in Asia and supplier of connected home solutions for a number of branded OEMs.  WNC is leveraging Skyworks’ power management and ZigBee® front-end modules for several of their low-power RF devices that, among other things, allows consumers to turn lights on and off, automate appliances, monitor security cameras and control other things around the home from anywhere via their smartphone.
