Technical Education Webinar Series
Title: Additive Manufacturing for Satellites: Advances in Passive RF and Lightweight Structure
Date: August 31, 2022
Time: 8am PT /11am ET
Sponsored by: 3D Systems
Presented by: Koen Huybrechts, Manager, Aerospace Application Development, Application Innovation Group, 3D Systems, Leuven, Belgium and Joe Dopkowski, Senior Applications Engineer, Application Innovation Group, 3D Systems, Littleton, CO
Abstract:
Explore how major OEMs, suppliers, and research institutions have designed and proven lightweight structure and passive radio frequency (RF) components for ground and space with additive manufacturing (AM). With AM, critical applications benefit from reduced volume, mass, and integration time, lower part counts, and flexible manufacturing, among other advantages. Each qualified process becomes fully transferrable and scalable for the OEM and their long-term supply base.
The purpose of this webinar is to help organizations take a step back, evaluate functional requirements, and build a realistic roadmap from small to big successes with AM; from individual flight parts to a secured supply chain which delivers system-level improvements.
3D Systems, via Layerwise, has partnered with Thales Alenia Space since 2013 to support AM application development with metal additive manufacturing. Work with Airbus Defence and Space began in 2015 as a development and qualification partner for new additively manufactured passive RF applications.
3D Systems has enabled more than 2,000 Ti and Al-alloy structural components for space flight since 2015, 200+ critical passive RF flight parts since 2017, and has delivered flight hardware for more than 15 satellites.
Presenter Bios:
Koen Huybrechts is the manager of the Aerospace Application Development team for the Application Innovation Group located in Leuven, Belgium. With 8 years of metal printing experience, Koen gains momentum by furthering the level of knowledge for customers in this industry to push boundaries together. Finding a balance between technical and economical requirements, he focuses on the added value of functional system design before looking at geometries.
As Senior Applications Engineer at 3D Systems in Littleton, CO, Joe Dopkowski is the first point of contact for new customers and projects spanning from medical to industrial. Joe specializes in helping customers to design for additive manufacturing and successfully reach and scale production from early samples to full technology transfer and training.
