Gary Lerude is the Technical Editor of Microwave Journal. Previously, he spent his career as a “midwife” aiding the growth of the compound semiconductor industry, from device to application, from defense to commercial. He spent 19 years at Texas Instruments, 11 years at MACOM and six years with TriQuint. Gary holds a bachelor’s in EE, a master’s in systems engineering and an engineers degree (ABD) in EE.

MACOM Faces Second Quarter of Chinese Headwinds

For the first quarter of fiscal 2018, MACOM reported revenue of $130.9 million, which was down 21 percent sequentially and down 14 percent from the prior year’s quarter. Buoyed by Apple's iPhone launch and demand for IoT and GaN components, Qorvo's revenue grew modestly in the third quarter of fiscal 2018 to $846 million, up 3 percent sequentially and 2 percent year-over-year. The infrastructure and defense business achieved record revenue of $203 million. While the mobile products unit benefitted from the latest iPhone models, revenue was down 2 percent year-over-year.

Reflecting the launch of the iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, Apple reported record financial performance for the company's December quarter. Revenue was $88.3 billion, 13 percent above the prior year's quarter and a 68 percent jump from the prior quarter. On a per week basis, iPhone shipments were 6 percent above last year's quarter.

Wolfspeed Posts Strong Growth, Scrambles to Add Capacity

Wolfspeed grew revenue 30 percent year-over-year during the second quarter of fiscal 2018, to $70.6 million, which reflected strong demand for SiC devices for electric vehicles. The better-than-expected revenue was limited by production capacity, as the capital investment to double Wolfspeed’s capacity won’t be fully online until the end of calendar 2018.
