Here's the weekly report, a recap of recent industry news that caught my attention:
Companies and Products
AceAxis will supply an LTE radio for the European Aviation Network (EAN) in-flight broadband system, which will switch between terrestrial and satellite access.
CST is being acquired by Dassault Systèmes for €220 million ($242 million). CST adds full spectrum EM simulation to Dassault's 3D design software, 3D digital mock-up and product lifecycle management portfolio.
Ericsson reported fiscal Q2 financial results, with overall revenue down 11 percent year-over-year. Networks segment revenue declined 14 percent. The company said market weakness intensified during the quarter and is expected to continue throughout 2016.
Google Fiber is now signing up subscribers in Charlotte's Highland Creek neighborhood. Residents will pay $70 per month for 1 Gbps data rates. Adding video programming increases the monthly cost to $130.
IDT released a 12-output clock generator with a typical RMS phase jitter below 85 fs (from 12 kHz to 20 MHz output frequency). The 8V49NS0312 is designed to provide the high-performance timing needed for 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet systems.
Integra demonstrated 1 kW and 200 W GaN PAs for aerospace radar applications, Amplifier development was funded through two SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) programs.
Keysight released a low frequency noise analyzer with wafer measurement software for characterizing 1/f and real-time noise (RTN). The integrated system can measure individual devices and integrated circuits, both on-wafer and packaged.
Mitsubishi announced a distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode, developed for 25 Gbps links that connect base stations to the central offices (CO). The device will be available September 1.
Several announcements from Qorvo: they are now a voting member of 3GPP and have supported more than 20 5G field trials with various infrastructure products. Their ZigBee ICs were chosen by Levarys for the Luna smart home system for energy management, which will be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland beginning in September.
Raytheon was awarded a $34 million contract by the U.S. Air Force to upgrade the EW capabilities on MALD-J, an air launched decoy-jammer. MALD has a range of 500 nautical miles, an endurance of 90 minutes and weight under 300 lb.
Rogers introduced new thermoset laminates (RO4730G3) for 4G and 5G base station and IoT antennas. Dk = 3.0 ±0.05, and the dissipation factor is 0.0023 at 2.5 GHz and 0.0029 at 10 GHz.
Skyworks reported fiscal Q3 financial results. The company met revenue and earnings guidance; however, revenue declined 7 percent from the prior year's quarter — the first drop in years — to $752 million. Growth in China and IoT helped offset the softness from Apple.
SpaceX successfully completed another launch and landing, this time landing the Falcon 9 rocket first stage on the ground.
Japan's SoftBank is buying IC designer ARM for £24 billion ($32 billion). ARM's technology is embedded in virtually all mobile phones, and the company is well positioned for IoT, which is a focus for SoftBank.
Markets and Technology
5G — The 3GPP released four technical reports on new services and markets for 5G (i.e., use cases). Read an overview with links to the reports at the 3G4G blog.
The White House launched the Advanced Wireless Research Initiative, a public-private partnership to coordinate the development of wireless technology. Telecom TV summarizes the initiative and compares it to the existing European model.
In a 5G trial, Vodafone and Huawei demonstrated data rates >20 Gbps using a 70 GHz link. They did not provide the channel bandwidth or other details of the setup.
Broadband — Facebook released an inspiring video showing last month's first test flight of their solar-powered drone. Aquila is designed to circle remote regions for months and provide access to the internet.
Radiation Tolerance of GaN — NRL and the University of Maryland published their research on the radiation tolerance of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. Read the full paper.
