Companies and Products
Advantech is supplying point-to-point radios to Raytheon for their "microwave development infrastructure." The Transcend 800 radios carry video, IP and TDM traffic.
Google Fiber added Oklahoma City, Jacksonville and Tampa to the list of possible locations for their 1 Gbps FTTH service. Last month they tagged San Diego and Irvine, Calif. and Louisville, Ky.
Keysight announced a new organization structure, with three business groups and centralized planning and technology. The changes are motivated to enhance innovation and foster growth. The company also announced a collaboration with China Southeast University on 5G massive MIMO test and measurement.
MACOM is marketing a QSFP28 chipset for data centers, reflecting the fruits of their optical acquisitions: Optomai, Mindspeed and BinOptics.
The U.S. Navy awarded Northrop Grumman a $95 million LRIP contract for the JCREW IED jammer. The company developed mounted, dismounted and fixed-site variants to protect vehicles, warfighters and permanent structures for the Navy and the Air Force. Northrop Grumman says JCREW is more effective than systems currently in the field.
Pasternack and Ducommun signed a private-label agreement to expand Pasternack's portfolio of off-the-shelf products. These will include coaxial electromechanical and PIN diode switches, various waveguide components and millimeter wave amplifiers.
Qorvo reported quarterly revenue of $708 million, up 12 percent year-over-year (Y/Y). Their mobile segment contributed 82 percent ($578 million) and grew 19 percent Y/Y. The infrastructure and defense segment (IDP) delivered $129 million, 13 percent below the prior year's quarter. IDP's revenue declined significantly the past two quarters from the slowdown in the wireless infrastructure build-out in China. During the earnings call, James Klein, president of IDP, said "We're starting to see signs of it picking back up as we go into this quarter." In his prepared remarks during the call, CEO Bob Bruggeworth described how IDP is positioning to grow two to three times faster than the market.
In a footnote to the earnings release, Qorvo announced that Gina Harrison was appointed to the role of principal accounting officer, taking the baton from Steve Buhaly. Buhaly remains CFO.
Skyworks completed their fiscal year with a record $3.26 billion in revenue, 42 percent growth from the prior fiscal year and a 26 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since fiscal 2009. Operating income broke 30 percent for this latest fiscal year.
Skyworks received Mexico's National Export Award, recognizing the performance and economic impact of their Mexicali assembly and test operation.
MILCOM 2015, the 34th edition of the conference, was held October 26 to 28 in Tampa. I spent a day touring the exhibition and mailed this post card.

The Small Cell Forum just updated their assessment and outlook for small cell deployment, appropriately titled "Crossing the Chasm." Read a summary and download the full report here.
Broadband — Don't give up on copper: BT and Alcatel-Lucent demonstrated 1.8 Gbps over 100 m and 5.8 Gbps over 35 m. Most U.K. homes are within 100 m of a fiber termination, at either a pole or "footway box."
