Weekly Report

For the week ending April 3, 2015

April 6, 2015

A recap of last week's news:

Companies and Products

GigOptix raised their Q1 revenue guidance by 5 to 6 percent above the prior range of $8.5 to 8.7 million. The increase reflects stronger demand for their high speed communications and industrial products.

MACOM released a dual-channel linear TIA, with 300 mW dissipation per channel, for 100G metro applications.

For 200 and 400G long-haul networks, MACOM is sampling a 46 Gbps quad-channel linear modulator driver. The driver has differential inputs and a single-ended output.

MACOM also introduced a power amplifier for the 18 GHz cellular backhaul band. The PA has an integrated power detector and provides over 2 W output with 43 dBm OIP3, 25 dB gain, and 7 dB noise figure.

Lastly, MACOM has developed a module to control bias voltages and the power up/down sequencing for GaN and depletion mode transistors.

NXP released a 60 W LDMOS asymmetric Doherty power transistor for 2490 to 2690 MHz cellular power amplifiers. The device has 48% drain efficiency and 15.5 dB gain. |

POET Technologies has engaged BAE Systems as a foundry to demonstrate their multifunction planar opto-electronic technology (POET).

Resonant's first customer (purportedly Skyworks) terminated their duplexer development agreement, saying Resonant needs to commercialize the product directly with the filter manufacturer (presumably the Panasonic-Skyworks JV).

Ruckus Wireless released the first 802.11ac Wave 2 access point. Wave 2 enables multi-user MIMO with >2 Gbps data rates.

Markets and Applications

DARPA released a biennial report outlining their vision and priorities for R&D investment.

Alcatel-Lucent was selected by China Telecom as one of three main suppliers for the operator's FDD-LTE network expansion to 40 cities.

Caroline Gabriel writes how mobile operator Orange is investing for the future: financial services, the Internet of Things (IoT), and network capacity.

Facebook plans to fly a prototype drone this summer, testing wireless Internet delivery for emerging markets.

The satellite market is entering a new entrepreneurial phase, reminiscent of the late '90s. Reflections on the recent SATELLITE 2015 conference.

IBM plans to invest $3 billion in the IoT over the next four years, setting up a new unit to focus on the market. Their partnership with The Weather Company to make weather data widely available is one example of the initiative.

Google Fiber is expanding their 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service from Provo to Salt Lake City.

On a lighter note, Google Fiber announced a new feature to help you reclaim your time: dial-up mode.

Steve Jobs is a hard act to follow. Yet Tim Cook is charting his own course at Apple. Read this Fortune profile.
