Canalys released its updated global smartphone forecasts. The latest numbers show that smartphone shipments will reach 1.35 billion units in 2019, a year-on-year decline of 3.1 percent.

Global smartphone shipments fell 6.8 percent in Q1 2019, marking a sixth consecutive quarter of decline. The total number of units shipped, at 313.9 million, was the lowest in nearly five years.

According to market research firm Canalys, 2018 smartphone shipments in China fell to their lowest level since 2013, 396 million units. Consumers keeping their smartphones longer is one factor, amplified considerably by the economic slowdown in China and consumers’ weakened purchasing power.

The road to self-driving cars is long and winding. According to the latest data from Canalys, despite industry hype, only 3 percent of new passenger cars sold in the U.S. in Q3 2018 had semi-autonomous driving features.

According to market research firm Canalys, India’s smartphone shipments grew 23 percent year-on-year in Q3 2017, reaching just over 40 million units. India is now the second largest smartphone market, after China.
