Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies completed a trial of frequency-division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO on Verizon’s network in Irvine, California. The companies said this was the first successful FDD massive MIMO trial with a fully compatible customer device.

Verizon has selected Ericsson to provide the networking equipment for Verizon’s 28 GHz, pre-standard 5G fixed wireless access service, which will be deployed in several U.S. communities during the second half of 2018.

Ericsson has launched three small cell products: a multi-operator Dot, a multi-Dot enclosure for indoor deployment and, for outdoor deployments, a strand-mounted enclosure to hold multiple small cell radios.

The transaction uses an app on the owner's and borrower's smartphones.

Ericsson and SoftBank Corp. will evaluate the performance of 28 GHz links, indoor and outdoor, stationary and mobile. The trials will test the performance of massive MIMO, massive beamforming, distributed MIMO, multi-user MIMO and beam tracking and how each supports the requirements of 5G.
