 The growing appetite for on-the-go, real-time information and mobile entertainment services will see the total number of subscribers for 4G LTE and 4.5G LTE-Advanced grow to nearly 411 million and 22 million respectively by year-end 2014. ABI Research’s 4G network deployment tracker anticipates that 45 networks will have commercially launched LTE-Advanced by 4Q 2014.  

 LTE-Advanced network deployments are becoming a tangible reality in 2014. As of the end of 1Q 2014, ABI Research estimates there were ~60 LTE-advanced trials, commitments and commercial deployments worldwide, of which 22 commitments were from Western Europe, 16 from Asia-Pacific, and 5 from North America. In addition, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is gaining market traction in 2014, providing voice services alongside LTE mobile broadband in a reliable and profitable way.

Agilent Technologies Inc. introduced the industry’s first LTE-A uplink 4x4 MIMO signal generation solution designed to enable R&D engineers to verify FDD and TDD LTE-A Evolved Node B receivers. The solution comprises N7624B/25B Signal Studio for LTE/LTE-Advanced FDD/TDD software with newly added support for UL 4x4 MIMO.

Worldwide LTE-related subscriptions reached 229.7 million in 2013, and will continually grow at a CAGR of 43.6% between 2013 and 2019, to exceed 2 billion. By the end of 2013, LTE-TDD subscribers accounted for 5% of the LTE market, while 94.2% of the LTE market was taken up by LTE-FDD.

In a joint effort, Rohde & Schwarz and Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., have extensively tested the user plane throughput of the new Qualcomm® Gobi™ 9x35  chipset in compliance with 3GPP Release 10 for LTE-Advanced. In the setup on display at Mobile World Congress, the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester from Rohde & Schwarz simulates the LTE-Advanced network.

Agilent Technologies Inc. extended its leadership in LTE-Advanced measurement with its latest X-Series measurement application release. The software provides the most comprehensive RF conformance testing of LTE-Advanced FDD and TDD transmitters and components to the 3GPP Release 11 specification. It is available for both benchtop and modular products.

Anritsu Co. announces that its ME7873L RF/RRM Conformance Test System has achieved the world’s first test platform approval criteria (TPAC) for LTE-advanced carrier aggregation (CA). This industry-leading achievement in the Global Certification Forum (GCF) enables wireless device manufacturers to implement certification of devices employing this new technology.
