NTT Docomo, Japan's biggest mobile operator, announced it is working with six suppliers to conduct various “experimental trials” for 5G involving higher frequency bands than those used for existing mobile technologies.

As worldwide Mobile Broadband Traffic heads toward 200 Exabytes per year, operators deploy 4G LTE, LTE-A, plead for spectrum, and try to manage usage through policy and pricing.  The physics of mobile broadband radio do not follow Moore’s Law of digital scaling, so leading-edge operators are ready to address the physical realities of small cells.  Nevertheless, the question remains; why not deploy carrier grade Wi-Fi with the small cells?

ABI Research expects growth of 10% in mobile telecoms capital expenditure (CapEx) in Latin America, rising to US$6.1 billion. ABI Research’s latest forecast for outdoor small cells indicates a healthy 2014 growth in equipment revenue at a year-on-year rate of 33% to $1.8 billion. This growth comes thanks to operators like AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Telefonica, Softbank, SK Telecom, and Sprint driving shipments of both outdoor and Metrocell deployments.
