MtronPTI announced it is collaborating with Jackson Labs Technologies Inc. for development and marketing of GPSDO (Global Positioning Satellite – Disciplined Oscillators) modules. The partnership takes advantage of Jackson Labs Technologies Inc.'s extensive technology portfolio and combines this with MtronPTI’s oscillator product and manufacturing expertise to provide state-of-the-art timing and frequency solutions to customers.
The first product to come out of this collaboration is the M9107, a new surface-mount module that incorporates many of the features and performance of the Mtron M9100 GPSDO series, but in a smaller 1 inch square footprint. It will provide Stratum-1 long-term performance with very low power consumption. The design allows for the elimination of the need for connecting cables by mounting directly onto the customer’s PC board via standard SMT processes. This new module will be the first jointly developed product exclusively for MtronPTI.
MtronPTI has so far introduced three versions of GPSDO products (M9100, M9101 and M9103) with more to come in the next few months. The M9100 is only 1.25 cubic-inches in size and provides Stratum-1 long-term performance of better than 10 parts per trillion per day and consumes less than 1.4 W of power, with an updated version in development that will consume less than 0.9 W of power. The M9101D exceeds 5 parts per trillion per day Stratum-1 performance. Both parts have 1 PPS and 10 MHz output signals. The latest product, M9103D, utilizes the M9101 product and incorporates an isolated three-port distribution amplifier with +13 dBm sine wave outputs.
Applications for these products are centered around two basic performance features: very accurate timing/frequency, and very precise location and velocity. Timing performance of these products can rival and exceed that of rubidium timing standards. These GPSDO modules can be used in a wide array of applications where very precise timing is mandatory. Communications systems requiring extreme frequency and timing accuracy and redundancy, telecom base stations, and Digital Video Broadcasting Synchronization (DVB) are examples of GPSDO technology utilization at its best.
A built-in GPS location accuracy of better than 2m CEP horizontal and velocity accuracy of better than 0.1m/s allow precision location applications such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), military geo positioning for vehicles and personnel, and tracking/locating of shipments in the transportation industry. Future applications could involve medical equipment, instrumentation and alternative energy market monitoring. A timing accuracy of better than 30ns rms to UTC provides world-class GPSDO performance.
According to Dick Thompson, MtronPTI’s VP of Sales and Marketing, “The collaboration on these products, and to be able to offer these complete subsystems to our customers and the market at large is very exciting for our company. The applications for these timing, frequency and position products are endless, and are a perfect synergistic sell with our other product lines. By incorporating our frequency control products into the module and selling into system level applications, we continue our mission to expand our market presence and the value we bring to our key markets and customers.”
