Specialist Microwave Solutions Ltd. (SMS) has acquired the microwave source manufacturing and repair business of Nera Ltd. (formerly of Continental Microwave Ltd.). The business, which compliments SMS's existing capabilities in the RF and microwave sector, will be operated from the company’s premises in the Cranfield Technology Park near Milton Keynes, UK.
SMS was originally established in 1999 to fill the gap left by many of the established microwave suppliers that chose to focus more on wireless opportunities at the expense of the more traditional sectors.
Its aim is to support the specialized design and manufacturing requirements for microwave components and assemblies in the defense, test equipment and sections of the industrial market in the UK and Europe. Product capabilities range from individual amplifiers, attenuators, limiters, switches, etc. to complete assemblies such as converters and radar receivers.
The company puts particular emphasis on its specialist capabilities for heritage designs and repairs, and has developed a highly valued service for the repair, refurbishment and replacement of heritage and obsolete parts formerly supplied by a wide variety of UK, European and US manufacturers.
The integration of the microwave oscillator designs and technical expertise from Nera into SMS's existing facilities will enable the company to offer improved repair services for oscillator products originating from both Nera and many other heritage manufacturers. Access to the original designs and drawings for the Nera oscillator product range will also allow SMS to offer newly manufactured units from the Nera back catalogue.
