HUBER+SUHNER’s new Direct GPS-over-Fiber (GPSoF) solution is the first to provide a fiber-optic connection directly to a GPS or other antenna to eliminate a separate power line.
Power-over-fiber uses the fiber-optic backbone to deliver power to the antenna, which eliminates external power sources at the remote end, while providing the data rate benefits of a fiber-optic connection.
This capability has the potential to “revolutionize the remote antenna application landscape” by solving power constraints at the remote end, according to the company, which expects the solution will particularly benefit the aerospace and defense market.
For the defense industry, supplying power to remote antennas is a challenge in shelter and other command and control applications.
To ensure safety, Direct GPSoF includes laser safety features compliant with the IEC laser standards. The use of the Q-ODC connector ensures a rugged connection using single mode fiber, which enables link distances to 10 km.
