This year, the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) and Exhibition will be held in Phoenix, Arizona for the first time. The IMS and Exhibition are several weeks earlier this year, which should result in somewhat cooler weather in Phoenix. As in the past, the technical program, presentations, exhibition and social events will leave the attendees exhausted by the end of the week. Registration opens at 2:00 pm on Saturday May 19th, with the first workshops starting on Sunday morning the 20th. The final workshops will be held on Friday the 25th. The workshops, IMS technical sessions, panel sessions, the Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC) symposium and exhibition will all be held in the Phoenix Civic Plaza in downtown Phoenix. The Automatic RF Techniques Group (ARFTG) meeting will be held in the nearby Crowne Plaza hotel. The Rump session, Awards Banquet and Student Paper Luncheon will be held in the Hyatt Regency hotel. A schedule of the week's events can be found on pages 42 and 43.
TRAVEL TO PHOENIX
Phoenix is served by the Sky Harbor International Airport located about four miles from the downtown area. It is a large, sprawling airport with three terminals. Make a note of your terminal for the return trip. Taxi fares to downtown or to most of the IMS hotels vary from $10 to $20. Shuttle service to the hotels is also available. IMS shuttle buses from the outlying hotels will be provided during the conference; however, many people may choose to rent a car for convenience and for individual sightseeing. All the major car rental companies are available at Sky Harbor. Phoenix is an easy city to drive in, with ample parking in most areas. There is a parking garage underneath the Civic Plaza.
HOTELS
The only two hotels within comfortable walking distance from the Civic Plaza are the Hyatt and the Crowne Plaza. The headquarters hotel is the Hyatt Regency located directly across the street from the Civic Plaza.
CLIMATE/ATTIRE
Despite an advertised "average daily temperature of 72°F," attendees can expect daytime temperatures in the high 80s or low 90s during May. The sun is very bright. Sunscreen is suggested for any extended outdoor exposure. Casual sportswear is the norm in most of the Southwest, although some restaurants may require a jacket and tie in the evening.
GUEST PROGRAM
Guests of attendees are invited to visit the hospitality suite in the Sundance room of the Hyatt regency. Local information will be available there as well as at an information booth centrally located in Lobby I of the Civic Plaza. Members of the Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau will be available to provide help and information.
Eleven tours have been planned ranging from half day tours of local attractions to overnight trips to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Day trips include Phoenix Valley Area Highlights, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Native American Cultures Tour, Desert Botanical Garden, Taliesin West, Phoenix Art Museum, Verde Canyon Train and Montezuma's Castle. Many of these tours may fill up quickly, so early reservations are suggested.
SOCIAL HIGHLIGHTS
All attendees are invited to attend a reception hosted by Microwave Journal and MTT-S at the Heard Museum of Southwestern Art, 2301 North Central Ave., Phoenix on Monday May 21 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Transportation to and from the museum will leave the Civic Plaza starting at 5:30 pm.
Symposium Exhibitors will host a cocktail reception on Wednesday, May 23 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Complimentary beverage tickets will be included in the registration packages.
The annual Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 7:30 to 10:00 pm in the Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. An elegant dinner is planned, followed by presentation of the major MTT-S awards. The entertainment will feature Native American Dancers and a performance by comedian Paula Poundstone.
All RFIC Symposium attendees are invited to a reception hosted by the RFIC Steering Committee and several leading RF/Wireless IC vendors on Sunday, May 20 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Admission for the attendee and one guest are included in the RFIC registration.
Student paper awards will be presented at a special luncheon banquet on Thursday, May 24 at noon in the Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
There will be a special reception and panel discussion by distinguished professionals in academia and industry to promote the Women in Engineering Forum. This is an interactive meeting to share common interests of concern to women in engineering, which will take place Wednesday, May 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Cassidy Room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Admission is not restricted to women.
On Tuesday evening, May 22 the MTT-S 2001 will sponsor a unique Southwesten event at the Corona Ranch. Drinks and dinner will include many Western events such as roping, fast draw and bull riding as well as a full rodeo show. Transportation will begin leaving the Civic Plaza at 5:00 pm.
THE MTT-S IMS TECHNICAL PROGRAM
The IMS technical sessions will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in six parallel sessions, plus RFIC sessions on Monday and Tuesday. There are 20 workshops spread over Sunday, Monday and Friday in addition to five short courses on the same days. Noontime panel sessions with box lunches will be held Monday through Thursday, and a Rump Session is scheduled for Tuesday evening. A total of 357 papers have been selected for oral presentation and 196 papers will be presented in the Interactive Forum mode.
THE PLENARY SESSION
All Microwave Week registrants and guests are invited to attend the IMS2001 Plenary Session, which will begin at 10:00 am on Tuesday morning in the Phoenix Symphony Hall adjacent to the Civic Plaza. Welcoming remarks from symposium chairman, Samir El-Ghazaly and Arizona State University president, Lattie Coor will be followed by welcomes from MTT-S president, Charlie Jackson and a technical overview from TPC chairman, Vijay Nair. The newly elected IEEE Fellows will be recognized followed by the presentation of the IEEE Electromagnetics Awards to professor Fawwaz T. Ulaby by IEEE president, Bruce Eisenstein.
Mr. Dennis A. Roberson, senior vice-president and chief technical officer of Motorola Inc. will present the keynote address.
STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION
The MTT-S Student Paper Competition encourages and recognizes excellence in research in microwave science and technology. A record number of 242 student papers were submitted to the competition this year. Of them, 140 were selected for presentation and the Technical Program Committee selected 26 finalists. All student papers will be presented in their respective sessions and the 26 finalists will also present their papers at the Student Paper Competition Interactive Forums on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:00 pm, during which time they will be judged. The winners will be recognized at the Student Paper Banquet at Noon on Thursday in the Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
EXHIBITION
This year's exhibition will be the largest in history with over 555 companies exhibiting their products and services in the five contiguous halls of the Civic Plaza. Exhibition hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Thursday. For a list of exhibitors, see pages 174184. µAPS
The Microwave Application and Products Seminars (µAPS) are technical, product-oriented sessions presented by selected IMS exhibitors. These sessions will offer the latest technology for the wireless, SATCOM, military and commercial markets. The sessions will be held in the µAPS theater at the rear of Hall E. Sessions are scheduled on Tuesday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, Wednesday from 9:30 am to 4:20 pm and on Thursday from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. 41 papers will be presented during the three day period.
HISTORICAL EXHIBIT
The MTT-S Historical exhibit will be located at the front of Hall A in the Civic Plaza. It will be open during the normal exhibition hours. The Historical Exhibit includes the MTT-S library collection of books and documents with descriptions of early theoretical and experimental achievements in microwave. Numerous artifacts and significant milestones in hardware development are also on display. There will be scheduled showing of videotapes describing historic developments. Two special presentations are also included this year. One is a special exhibit of the inventions of Al Gross, who is recognized for his contributions as a pioneer in the field of mobile communications starting with his invention of the walkie-talkie, a hand-held, two-way radio. The second is an exhibit from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) celebrating it's centennial. Originally known as the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), workers at NIST have made significant contributions to metrology and the related sciences. This exhibition celebrates 100 years of those achievements.
AWARDS
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to recognize and individual who has given outstanding service for the benefit and advancement of the Microwave Theory and Technigues Society. This year's recipient is Dr. Reynold Kagiwada.
Distinguished Educator Award This award was inspired by the untimely death of Professor Fred J. Rosenbaum (19371992). The award recognizes a distinguished educator in the field of microwave engineering who best exemplifies the special human qualities of Fred Rosenbaum, who considered teaching a high calling and demonstrated his dedication to the Society through tireless service. This year the award will be presented to K.C. Gupta.
The Microwave Pioneer Award recognizes an individual or team not exceeding three persons having made outstanding technical contributions that advance microwave theory and techniques and are described in an archival paper published at least 20 years prior to the year of the award. This year's recipient is Prof. Om P. Gandhi.
The Microwave Application Award recognizes an individual or team for outstanding application of microwave theory and techniques. This year's recipient is James C. Rautio.
The Microwave Prize is an annual award for the most significant contribution by a published paper to the field of interest of the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society during the year prior to the Fall meeting of the ADCOM. This year's winners are Dan Anderson, Mitek Lisak, Ulf Jorden Torbjorn and Mats Ahlander for their paper "Microwave Breakdown in Resonators and Filters" published in IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, MTT-48, pp. 25472556, (1999).
The N. Walter Cox Award has been established in recognition of the qualities of N. Walter Cox and his service to the Society prior to his untimely death in 1988. It is given to a Society volunteer whose efforts on behalf of the Society best exemplify Walter's spirit and dedication. This year's recipient is John W. Wassel.
The IEEE Electromagnetics Award was established in 1996, and is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to electromagnetics in the areas of theory, application or education. The award consists of a bronze medal, certificate and a cash prize. This year's recipient is Fawwaz Ulaby.
FELLOWS
The grade of IEEE Fellow is conferred in recognition of unusual and outstanding professional distinction. It is awarded at the initiative of the IEEE Board of Directors following a rigorous nomination and evaluation process. Individuals receiving this recognition have demonstrated extraordinary contributions to one or more fields of electrical engineering, electronics, computer engineering and related sciences. This grade is not conferred automatically upon nomination; only a small fraction of those nominated are selected. Fifteen MTT-S Members who were evaluated by the society were elected to the grade of Fellow this year. They are: Charles Howard Cox III, Samir M. El-Ghazaly, Pierre Guillon, Aditya Kumar Gupta, Wojciech Kazimierz Gwarek, Deiter Stefan Jager, Raafat R. Mansour, Wolfgang S. Menzel, Martin Nisenoff, Edward Anthony Rezek, Arvind Kumar Sharma, Peter H. Seigel, Wai-Cheung Tang and Ke Wu.
In addition, there are 12 MTT-S members who were evaluated by other societies. They are: John D. Cressler, Daniel De Zutter, Ronald Dale Esman, Peter S. Hall, Jian-Ming Jin, Kei May Lau, Krzysztof A. Mickalski, Donald Ralph Pflug, Roberto G. Rojas, Krishna Shenai, Toshiyuki Shiozawa and Winston I. Way.
