JMA Wireless has acquired Texas-based PHAZR, which provides 5G virtualized radio network products.
JMA Wireless said that the acquisition will allow it to become the first American company with complete LTE and 5G technologies that address the full range of spectrum from 600 MHz to 47 GHz—and that as the Federal Communications Commission continues to open up new spectrum for 5G, the combined company is “in a position to support ongoing demand across a wide variety of licensed and unlicensed spectrum.”
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
PHAZR CEO Farooq Khan stated that the acquisition process started two months ago.
“PHAZR will continue to operate under its brand with PHAZR 5G products offered as part of JMA’s overall product portfolio,” Khan said.
JMA Wireless said that the combination creates an integrated architecture that addresses both nonstandalone and standalone systems for inbuilding, large venues, and outdoor 5G and LTE.
PHAZR touts its 5G RAN technology as integrating all baseband and antenna elements into a single compact package. Its radios support both mid-band (2 to 6 GHz) and mmWave (24 to 47 GHz) bands. All of this capability comes in a package the size of a laptop computer, JMA Wireless said.
“Combining JMA Wireless and PHAZR, the world’s most advanced 4G LTE and 5G RAN technology is now in one U.S. based company, providing mobile network operators a new, flexible option that can deploy 5G across any part of their footprint including the hard to each, less accessible areas today--dense strand mount, buildings, and venues included.” said John Mezzalingua, CEO of JMA Wireless. “Further, we’re doubling down on U.S. based innovation with all 5G development being driven domestically,” he added.
In October, Khan told RCR Wireless News that PHAZR intended to start shipping 5G New Radio (NR) products for commercial deployments starting in the second quarter of 2019, after the firm received Federal Communications Commission and European CE certification for its 5G mmWave base stations in the U.S. and Europe.
The executive said at the time that the PHAZR’s 5G NR vRAN mobility portfolio was in trials with three major U.S. operators. He also said that the firm was engaging with customers in the U.K., Italy and Germany for 26 GHz and mid-band trials next year.
PHAZR was founded two years ago and has 30 employees in Texas as well as a software team of more than 30 employees in India. JMA Wireless designs and builds in-building and outdoor mobile wireless systems enabling LTE, 5G and CBRS services on mobile operator networks worldwide.
