After its success at IMS2017, the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition for Students and Young Professionals will be run for a second year at IMS2018 in Philadelphia.
3MT® is intended to showcase those presenters who have distilled their research into a presentation of three minutes or less, supported by only one static slide and no other props or aids, given in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience.
In the months before the competition, finalists will be given advice on how to craft high-quality presentations, and will have the opportunity to revise their presentations and have practice sessions with the chairs (who have no stake in judging). They will also be invited to attend a Webinar to help improve their presentation skills. On Monday afternoon, finalists will deliver their presentations in front of a general audience, and a panel of five non-specialist judges will rank contestants based on how engaging, accessible and compelling they made their presentations. Feedback will be given to competitors, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three presentations, together with a "People's Choice" award given to the talk most popular among the audience members in attendance.
