L-3 Telemetry-West (L-3 TW) announced that it has received the first order for its brand-new Ka-Band satellite command receiver from Mitsubishi Electric Corp. The new receiver will support the Es’hail 2 communications satellite that Mitsubishi Electric is scheduled to deliver to satellite operator Qatar Satellite Company (Es’hailSat) in Doha, Qatar, in 2016. Based on L-3’s existing Ku-Band telemetry and command radio, the frequency-agile receiver has the capability to change frequency while on orbit, giving satellite operators and manufacturers increased flexibility in handling jamming/interference and changing orbits.
L-3 TW’s Ka-Band TC&R product is an adaptation of its current Ku-Band telemetry and command radio, which is in production. Both the transmitter and receiver are frequency-agile.
“We are very excited about Mitsubishi Electric’s confidence in our ability to provide such a new and advanced product for its satellite procurement programs,” said Kevin McGuire, international business development director for L-3 TW. “Partnering with Mitsubishi Electric is a very important step in increasing our global presence in satellite communications, and we look forward to a long and lasting relationship.”
The Es’hail 2 satellite is designed to have a more than 15-year design life and will offer direct broadcasting services throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Its Ku-Band and Ka-Band capabilities will also provide government communication services throughout the region.
