Skyworks Powers Samsung's Highly Popular Ultra Series Handsets
WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 24, 2007--Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS), an innovator of high performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors enabling mobile connectivity, today announced that Samsung is leveraging its HeliosTM II-Plus EDGE radios and industry leading InteraTM front-end modules (FEMs) for their Ultra Series handsets including the SGH-U600 and SGH-U700. Samsung's Ultra Edition models deliver some of the latest advances in technology and multimedia functionality, creating some of the slimmest and most powerful handsets. Designed with the user experience in mind, these slider models feature a 3 megapixel camera, high-speed Web connectivity, extensive multimedia and audio capabilities, and jewel-inspired casing. The SKY77519 FEM incorporated by Samsung is the industry's smallest solution for open-polar EDGE architectures, enabling OEMs to raise the mobile bar with an optimized power usage solution (OPUS) and delivering maximum performance that can help increase talk times by 10 percent, power savings by 30 percent, and battery capacity by 10 percent. Skyworks' HeliosTM II-Plus radios reduce RF board space by an additional 25 percent when compared to the company's previous HeliosTM designs, interface with virtually any analog baseband, and radically simplify factory calibration. "Skyworks is pleased to be supporting Samsung with solutions that are pushing the limits on performance and integration," said Brian M. Daly, Skyworks' vice president of marketing. "We are delighted that our innovative designs are enabling Samsung and others to deliver high-performance, feature-rich phones with state-of-the-art design for today's consumers." About the SKY77519 The SKY77519 is a transmit and receive (TX-RX) FEM designed in a very low-profile compact form factor of 6 x 6 x 1.1 mm for quad-band WEDGE mobile handsets. This FEM supports Class 12 GPRS multi-slot operation and EDGE polar modulation, while also providing an antenna switch through port to support WCDMA Band 1 or 2. A custom silicon integrated circuit contains decoder circuitry to control the radio frequency (RF) switch while providing a low current external control interface. The integrated PA control (PAC) function provides envelope amplitude control by reducing the sensitivity to input drive, power supply, and process variation. About HeliosTM II-Plus HeliosTM II-Plus condenses EDGE RF functionality into two compact devices: The SKY74138 RF transceiver is a highly integrated device for multi-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE applications. The receive path implements Skyworks' direct conversion architecture, consisting of four integrated low noise amplifiers (LNAs), a quadrature demodulator, and selectable baseband filter. Similar to its predecessors, the transmitter path uses Skyworks' proprietary closed Polar LoopTM EDGE architecture. This enables the highly integrated device to be combined with virtually any standard GSM/EGPRS baseband without requiring any special processing interfaces. The SKY77523 is a transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) FEM with integrated coupler for quad band GSM and EDGE applications. In addition, a CMOS integrated circuit provides the internal PAC function, interface circuitry, and decoder circuitry to control the RF switches. Together, feedback signals from the SKY74138 and SKY77523 form an integral part of Skyworks' Polar LoopTM transmit architecture, which automatically adjusts amplitude and phase, providing very robust performances of the radio system, and not relying on blind corrections of the power amplifier (PA) process variation like other EDGE transmit architectures.
