In a contract, worth €32 million, EADS Secure Networks has signed a four-year contract with the French National Gendarmerie (Military Police) to modernize its RUBIS secure radio communications network. Thus enabling the Gendarmerie to ensure long-term viability of its radio communications network, benefit from new applications and better respond to operational requirements. The network modernization project fits into a major program to renew means of information and communication undertaken by the Gendarmerie to support re-organization of its command structures.
RUBIS was developed by EADS at the end of the 1980s and has been deployed throughout France since 2000 to become the first national digital PMR network in the world. This new contract signals the French National Gendarmerie’s confidence in the company itself and TETRAPOL technology in particular. It also opens up the way for a cycle of modernization of existing networks.
For this first stage of modernization the objectives are to cover replacement of the current commutation core by the new generation TETRAPOL IP switch, deployment of the latest program version V35IP, development of a new generation VHF mobile terminal and a UHF/VHF gateway.
Once modernized the RUBIS network will contribute to enhanced integration of data into command and information tools and will enable the French National Gendarmerie to more effectively respond to the changing needs of operational units both on an everyday basis and when it comes to crisis management, thanks to new functionalities. These will include: improved access to data applications such as national files and the Schengen area (registrations, vehicle log books, missing persons, etc.), short message service, management of status situations so that the command echelon can follow progress out in the field of the operational teams without having to resort to voice communication and geographical localization of units using GPS chips equipping mobile terminals.
