Without question, the rise of 5G has changed the landscape of wireless testing. One of the biggest changes is the ability of test engineers to perform over-the-air (OTA) testing without connecting anything or having a special setup. This is something that was not historically possible with past generations of wireless devices, as a result of FCC regulation and spectrum licensing law.

With advances in digital signal processing techniques modern wireless communications systems and radar systems have become increasingly digital and more constraints have been placed on packing more information into less and less bandwidth. On the wireless side, modulation formats have become more complicated with less margin for symbol error.

Millimeter-wave technology transforms wireless communications by enabling higher data throughput. It brings a new set of test challenges to the lab including excessive path loss and wideband noise, that degrade measurement accuracy and repeatability.

The focus of this white paper is on the general challenge of antenna design and simulation as implemented with antenna-in-package (AiP) and antenna-in-module (AiM) advanced packaging technology, as well as the software tools necessary for antenna, antenna array and feed structure, and front-end simulations.

Bias tees are used extensively to apply DC biasing to RF circuits. This Piconics/Modelithics white paper explains how bias tees can be designed using models that are accurate all the way to mmWave frequencies. Design details and simulated results presented. Measured data is then compared to the simulated performance.

Most ADAS functions rely on radar sensors, and these safety-critical components must function correctly even under the most demanding of RF environments. We have released a white paper describing a test procedure to replicate real life scenarios where the ADAS radar functions are activated during EMS testing and it contains some very interesting results.

In broadband bias applications, most inductors do not cover enough impedance bandwidth. Bandwidth can be increased by putting three or four inductors in series, but DC losses and filter complexity increase. Instead, a broadband bias choke provides wide bandwidth in a single inductor package.
