Small Cell Wireless Backhaul for 4G – Underlying technology Enablers

The cellular industry seems to be buzzing with “small cell” fever.  Within the general thrust of implementing small cell outdoor cellular networks, backhaul is seen as one of the major barriers to deployment.  The market for equipment used to provide backhaul to these sites can be generally evaluated by the number of micro-cellular base stations that are forecasted, along with an assessment of whether they’d be backhauled using various, more likely backhaul technologies (i.e. fiber or wireless). Figure 1shows the result of one industry forecast focused on the micro-cellular market.

TI adds RF software development kit to its Base Station Softwarepac

Texas Instruments announced the addition of the RF Software Development Kit (RFSDK) to its Base Station SoftwarePac, enabling small cell developers to configure the baseband-to-radio communication and achieve first call or system verification in just one day compared to the weeks or months it took previously. With the new RFSDK, TI's KeyStone™- based TCI6630K2L small cell System-on-Chip (SoC) and TCI6631K2L backhaul SoC can now seamlessly implement digital radio functions like digital pre-distortion (DPD) and crest factor reduction (CFR), and use a JESD204B interface to communicate with TI's analog front end transceiver, the AFE7500, to maximize performance and system power efficiency.

RFMW, Ltd. offers small cell PAs with big performance

RFMW, Ltd. announces design and sales support for two “small cell” power amplifiers from TriQuint. The TQP2451 and TQP2453 support 1900 MHz and 1800 MHz transmitter designs respectively. With average power output of 2.5 W, both devices include 3 gain stages, the final stage being a Doherty design for high peak power performance up to 20 W. The TQP2451 covers 1930 to1995 MHz with power added efficiency of 38 percent and <-50 ACLR. The TQP2453 offers 35 percent PAE over 1805 to1885 MHz. Both the TQP2451 and TQP2453 utilize 18 V and 5 V Vcc. Both devices are offered in a 20 x 20 mm package for 3G/4G wireless infrastructure, linearized transmitters, MIMO and heterogeneous networks applicable to small cells.
